Since California health insurance is offered to students at a discounted rate, the school will not back down on the policy. Not all schools hold this same policy, though. There are other colleges and universities that do not require their students to have health insurance, but do charge health center fees. These fees are charged per semester, but students who need to can utilize the service as needed. It is much less costly, and seems like a more reasonable plan. While nobody is denying the importance of health insurance, and all colleges and universities recommend it even if they do not mandate it, it is still a fact that not everyone can afford it. Tuition fees, books and supplies, transportation or dormitory costs all factor in to a student budget. Adding over one thousand more dollars in insurance fees might be just too much for some students to really afford.
